About disposable helium canisters
A disposable arrives filled, with the nozzle already fitted. You open the valve, fill your balloons, and put the empty canister out for recycling. No deposit, no depot, no collection to arrange.
Sizes run from 50 balloons to 300. The number on each one is for 9 inch latex — if you are filling 12 inch you will get well under half that, and an 18 inch foil takes about as much as a 12 inch latex.
Past about 300 balloons the sums stop favouring disposables and a hire cylinder becomes the cheaper option, so it is worth checking both before you order for anything large.
Common questions
- How many balloons will one fill?
- The number on the canister is for 9 inch latex balloons inflated to size. A 12 inch latex takes well over twice the gas, so expect well under half the figure. Over-inflating is the most common reason people run short.
- How long does the gas last once opened?
- Use it the same day. The valve on a disposable is not designed to hold pressure over weeks, so a part-used canister will be noticeably down by the time you come back to it.
- Can I recycle the empty canister?
- Yes — they are steel and go in with scrap metal at a household recycling centre. Make sure it is fully empty and the valve is left open before you take it.
